Market Hotel Ballarat

About The Market Hotel

Ballarat Pub and Beer Garden

For over 100 years the Market Hotel has been Faithfully serving Ballarat Pub goers.

The Market Hotel was built in 1896 and sits on the northeast corner of Park Street and Brazenor Street, Ballarat, next to the old Ballarat Saleyards.

The hotel has had an eventful history with many publicans calling it home. During 2022 work was undertaken to remove paint and cladding from the hotel's exterior walls to reveal the original red bricks. The hotel has also undergone extensive internal renovations, with old bedroom walls removed to create a large main bar area which opens onto the rear outdoor area.

Inside features an adaptation of the Travis Price mural in the garden, a tilt to the pub's old saleyards history.

The first Market Hotel was a weatherboard structure built on site in 1896 that later was destroyed in a fire. In the early 1900s the pub was rebuilt in brick and had largely remained untouched for years.

Restoration works have focused on using salvaged materials, refashioned into the new space, including hand-stencilled lino found in the old bedrooms creating a decorative feature on the new bar. The bar itself has been built from an old church altar from Victoria Street.
